German universities do not recognise all school certificates. School leavers from Ukraine, Central Asia, the Caucasus and many other countries need an additional year of preparation.
Studienkolleg is a preparatory school at a German university. It lasts 1–2 semesters and ends with the Feststellungsprüfung (FSP) exam. Pass it successfully and you go straight to university.
